Polish authorities have arrested Dmitry V., the former head of Russia-based crypto exchange WEX, in response to an extradition request from the U.S. Department of Justice. Dmitry V., accused of fraud and money laundering during his tenure at WEX, is currently in custody in Warsaw.

"Dmitry V. was detained on Dec. 6 and remains in custody pending extradition," a Polish police spokesperson confirmed. If extradited, he faces charges that could result in a maximum sentence of 20 years.

WEX, the successor to BTC-e, was once Russia's largest crypto exchange, processing over $9 billion in transactions. It collapsed in 2018 amid allegations of fraudulent activities, with $450 million still unaccounted for. BTC-e itself was notorious for its role in laundering funds from major crypto hacks, including the Mt. Gox breach.

The arrest adds to Dmitry V.'s history of legal challenges. He was detained in Poland in 2021, released after 40 days, and previously arrested in Italy and Croatia.

This development also ties into broader efforts to address crypto-related crimes. Alexander Vinnik, former head of BTC-e, was extradited to the U.S. in 2022 and later pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering. Vinnik, known as "Mr. Bitcoin," is currently serving a prison sentence.
