Forsage Founders Indicted in $340M Ponzi Scheme Disguised as DeFi Platform

Four founders of Forsage, a decentralized finance (DeFi) investing platform, have been indicted in the U.S. for operating a Ponzi scheme that swindled investors out of $340 million. The indicted individuals include Vladimir Okhotnikov, Olena Oblamska, Mikhail Sergeev, and Sergey Maslakov, who promoted Forsage on social media as a legitimate investment opportunity. However, it was later revealed that the system was a fraudulent scheme.
According to a statement by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Forsage relied on smart contracts on Ethereum, Binance Smart Chain, and Tron that were "consistent with a Ponzi scheme." Investors who purchased a 'slot' in a Forsage smart contract were automatically redirected to other investors, resulting in earlier investors receiving funds from later investors.
This indictment follows the charges made by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in August against 11 individuals associated with Forsage for fraud. The SEC accused them of selling unregistered securities and operating a Ponzi scheme.
The Forsage case is yet another example of the growing concern over fraudulent activities in the crypto industry. Regulators and law enforcement agencies are increasing their efforts to clamp down on scams and fraudulent activities, particularly in the DeFi space.
