Founder of Gotbit Cryptocurrency Firm Extradited to the U.S. Over Fraud Allegations
Aleksei Andriunin, the founder of cryptocurrency financial services firm Gotbit, has been extradited from Portugal to the United States to face serious charges related to market manipulation and wire fraud. The 26-year-old was arrested in Portugal in October 2024 and brought to Boston in February 2025 to stand trial. According to a federal indictment, Andriunin, along with two directors of Gotbit, is accused of running a widespread scheme to artificially inflate cryptocurrency trading volumes.
The indictment claims that Gotbit, known for its market-making services, manipulated cryptocurrency markets between 2018 and 2024. Andriunin allegedly led efforts to execute wash trading strategies to inflate the volume of trades for multiple cryptocurrency clients. These tactics were reportedly designed to help coins gain exposure on influential platforms like CoinMarketCap and secure listings on larger exchanges. Wash trading involves executing trades that do not result in actual market risk or change but artificially boost trading volume.
It is alleged that Andriunin and his company made millions of dollars by executing fraudulent trades on behalf of clients, using multiple accounts to conceal their activities from public scrutiny on the blockchain. In addition, Andriunin allegedly transferred large sums of money from Gotbit's operations into his personal Binance account.
The charges against Andriunin include wire fraud and conspiracy to manipulate markets, each of which carries severe penalties. Wire fraud could result in a prison sentence of up to 20 years, while conspiracy charges carry up to five years in prison. These charges highlight the U.S. government's increasing attention to fraudulent practices within the cryptocurrency industry.
The case underscores ongoing efforts by U.S. authorities to regulate market manipulation in the rapidly growing digital asset space. With cryptocurrency firms under scrutiny, this legal battle marks a significant point in the pursuit of justice against fraud in the sector.
The prosecution of Andriunin is being led by the U.S. Attorney’s office, with support from international law enforcement, including Portugal’s Policia Judiciaria. The case also highlights the cooperation between authorities across borders to address financial crimes in the cryptocurrency market.
As the case progresses, it remains to be seen how the legal landscape for cryptocurrency market manipulation will evolve, especially as digital asset regulation continues to be a key focus in major economies around the world.
