FTX Executives' Prison Sentence Reductions: Ryan Salame and Caroline Ellison Early Release
Two former FTX executives, Ryan Salame and Caroline Ellison, have had their prison sentences reduced following their involvement in the cryptocurrency exchange's collapse.
Ryan Salame, once Co-CEO of FTX Digital Markets, began serving his 7.5-year sentence in October 2023. However, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), his release is now scheduled for March 1, 2031—over a year earlier than originally planned. The reduction is attributed to good behavior under the 2018 First Step Act, which allows inmates to earn time off their sentences for good conduct.
Salame was convicted for his role in the massive fraud scheme led by FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried. He joined FTX in 2019 after meeting Bankman-Fried at a blockchain event. In the lead-up to his sentencing, Salame defended Bankman-Fried on social media and shifted blame to former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison, accusing her of instructing him to make political donations.
Caroline Ellison, who was sentenced to two years in prison and three years of probation for her role in the fraud, will be released earlier than initially scheduled. Her new release date is July 20, 2026, roughly three months ahead of the original timeline.
The case continues to highlight concerns about regulatory oversight within the cryptocurrency industry as it grapples with the fallout from one of its most significant scandals.
Sam Bankman-Fried, the mastermind behind the scheme, remains in prison, serving a 25-year sentence for his role in the collapse of FTX.
