German and European authorities have taken down more than 1,400 illegal online trading domains in one of the largest coordinated crackdowns on investment fraud to date. The operation—codenamed Operation Heracles—was led by the Baden-Württemberg State Criminal Police, in cooperation with BaFin, Europol, and Bulgarian law enforcement.

The dismantled networks allegedly operated from Eastern Europe, targeting retail investors across Europe through online ads and social media campaigns. Victims were directed to fake trading platforms where brokers, often working from call centres, convinced them to invest in forex, crypto, or stock products that did not actually exist.

"In many cases, it took months for the victims to realise their money was never actually invested," the agencies said in a joint statement.

According to Birgit Rodolphe, Executive Director at BaFin, the schemes have grown increasingly sophisticated, using artificial intelligence tools to mass-produce fake websites that mimic regulated brokers. "The perpetrators are becoming increasingly professional," she said.

The latest action follows a similar European enforcement effort in June that dismantled around 800 domains. Investigators said they have since recorded 20 million access attempts to those previously blocked sites—underscoring both the persistence of the fraud networks and the scale of the problem.

Authorities said the recent measures specifically targeted the infrastructure supporting the scams, disabling domains and seizing digital assets where possible. Europol is now coordinating cross-border analysis to trace funds and identify those behind the operations.

Despite the large-scale takedown, officials warned that many of the call centres run from jurisdictions with limited cooperation, complicating efforts to recover stolen funds. Still, investigators hailed Operation Heracles as a "decisive step" in Europe's ongoing fight against online trading fraud.
