The UK's Financial Conduct Authority has coordinated a global enforcement action against illegal financial promotions by social media influencers, known as finfluencers. The operation involved 17 regulators across five continents, targeting major retail trading hubs in Singapore, Hong Kong, the UAE, Australia, and New Zealand.

During the initiative, the FCA monitored online activity and requested the removal of 120 accounts linked to illegal promotions. It identified 1,267 unlawful adverts that reached at least 2.3 million UK users. The FCA noted that 66% of the adverts came from entities already on its Warning List.

The "week of action" combined enforcement, public awareness, and education to reduce consumer harm from unauthorized promotions. In the UK, the regulator secured a guilty plea from one individual for illegal promotions and launched criminal proceedings against two others. It also issued four warning letters and published 34 new public alerts.

Steve Smart, the FCA's Executive Director of Enforcement, said the collective push with international partners is vital to protect consumers. He added that progress against financial crime depends on every part of the system, including social media firms, playing their role. This follows a similar international enforcement week in June 2025.

Regulatory approaches to finfluencers vary by jurisdiction. Hong Kong recently saw its first custodial sentence for a finfluencer, while the UAE requires licenses for online financial content producers. New Zealand employs an enforcement-led approach and has proposed stricter CFD rules, including leverage caps.
