Gránit Bank to Enter Romanian Market as First Foreign Expansion

Gránit Bank, a digital bank based in Hungary, has announced its plan to commence operations in Romania in the third quarter of 2024. This marks the bank's first venture into an international market. The expansion will allow Gránit Bank to offer its services in Romania, providing clients with accounts in both Romanian lei and Hungarian forints through a dedicated app available in Romanian, Hungarian, and English.
The bank currently boasts 200,000 users and holds total assets amounting to EUR 3.56 billion. This expansion is part of Gránit Bank's strategy to capitalize on its recent dynamic growth and stable foundation to broaden its reach.
Founded in 2010, Gránit Bank was initially created to support local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Hungary during the global financial and economic crisis. The bank was one of the early adopters of digital banking services in Hungary. In 2021, Hungarian real estate holding BDPST acquired a 57% stake in Gránit Bank from a Hungarian consultancy firm, marking a significant shift in the bank's ownership structure.
