HK SFC Bans Former UBS Director for Life

The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) of Hong Kong has imposed a lifetime ban on Charles Lam Chung Yiu, a former associate director at UBS AG, barring him from re-entering the financial industry. This decision comes in response to Lam's criminal convictions, which led the SFC to conclude that he is not a fit and proper person to be involved in regulated activities.
Lam was sentenced to seven years in prison by the Court of First Instance on November 7 2023, following his convictions for two counts of theft and two counts of dealing with property known or believed to represent proceeds of an indictable offence. The court found that between 13 March and 27 October 2020, while overseeing a UBS project to compensate overcharged clients, Lam manipulated UBS's system to divert at least 46 payments, totaling $1,875,030.64, into his own accounts. Additionally, various bank accounts controlled by Lam received substantial cash deposits, which were quickly transferred out, further linking these transactions to his theft from UBS.
