HKEX’s New CEO Alejandro Nicolas Aguzin Took Office on May 24

After serving JP Morgan for over three decades, Alejandro Nicolas Aguzin took his office as the new CEO of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) as well as an ex-officio member of the Board on May 24 2021, following the leaving of Mr Calvin Tai, the interim CEO, according to a press release by HKEX on Feb. 09 2021 regarding the appointment.
As a renowned executive with experience in capital markets and financial services, Aguzin has extensive knowledge of not only Mainland China, but Americas and globally as well. "He brings with him a wealth of international and regional experience in capital markets and financial services, including extensive knowledge of Mainland China, having served as chief executive for JP Morgan in Asia," said Mrs Cha, the incumbent chairwoman of HKEX. "(which) makes him extremely well-placed to lead HKEX as we enter a post-Covid world."
"I am deeply honoured to be asked to lead the world's largest stock market group, especially at such an important time for global financial markets," the new chief executive said.
Urgent Tasks for the New Executive
Aguzin is tasked to "deepen its ties with the capital market in the Chinese mainland, and to collaborate with the Shanghai and Shenzhen bourses in a synergistic way to improve its international standing to be comparable with the NASDAQ. Also, Aguzin needs to restore and rebuild foreign institutional investors' confidence, as some foreign capital has fled from the city over negative impact from social unrest," Dong Dengxin, director of the Financial Securities Institute at Wuhan University of Science and Technology, said in an interview earlier.
