For forex brokers, leveraging social media for promotion, communication, research, and information gathering is nothing new. However, have market professionals ever considered using Reddit? Fazzaco has spoken about the power of Discord and whether brokers should add it a while ago. Much like Discord, it is, too, a platform driven by user-generated content.

Subreddits: The Building Blocks of Reddit

Founded in 2005, Reddit may not seem as new as platforms like Discord, TikTok, or Telegram. Essentially, it's an electronic bulletin board system evolved from early internet forums. Despite nearly two decades in existence, it boasts a massive user base. In 2024, Reddit has an average of 62.24 million daily active users and 2.3 billion monthly.

The basic unit of Reddit is known as a subreddit. According to their own ranking at the time of writing, the subreddit with the most members is r/funny, with 60 million members. Looking through the top communities list, the leading trading/finance subreddit is r/personalfinance with 19 million members, ranked 37th overall. Following it are r/wallstreetbets with 16 million members (49th), r/Bitcoin with 6.6 million members (86th), r/Economics with 4.2 million members (144th), r/Daytrading with 3.1 million members (213th), and r/StockMarket with 3 million members (226th). PS: All of the above have higher rankings than r/kpop.

Specifically, for forex trading,r/Forex has 387k members. Although it ranks 1k+, it still belongs to the top 1% of all communities on Reddit.

How Redditors Affected Markets

Most people visit Reddit for entertainment, like checking out some dad jokes, memes, or being a keyboard warrior debating with others on some trending topics. But, for the financial sector, it has seen some significant impacts from Reddit communities.

One notable example is the 2021 GameStop short squeeze. In January of that year, the stock of the US electronics retailer GameStop experienced a dramatic short squeeze, causing significant financial consequences for some hedge funds. This was largely driven by r/wallstreetbets, a community of high-risk retail traders who influenced the surge in GameStop's stock price.

The reason? Well, GameStop became a "meme stock" due to retail traders' enthusiasm on Reddit. Meme stocks, while inherently risky, also hold substantial profit potential. The collective push from users in communities like r/wallstreetbets propelled GameStop's stock to unprecedented heights.

How Do Brokers Leverage Reddit?

It is evident that effectively leveraging Reddit's community influence can bring tangible benefits to brokers. First, we need to filter out high-quality subreddits with substantial active user bases, such as the top investment and trading communities mentioned above. Market researchers can then analyze these communities by sorting posts under Hot, New, Top, and Rising categories. Each category has sub-options, such as "Now," "Today," "This Week," "This Month," "This Year," and "All Time" under the Top category. This filtering process helps identify the most discussed topics within the subreddit.

For major brokers and large financial institutions with enough promotional budgets, direct collaboration with Reddit is an option. By paying for advertisements, they can have their promotional content labeled as Promoted and placed on users' homepages.

Don't Let Reddit's Karma Backfire on You

Reddit features a unique karma system, which awards karma points based on the upvotes and downvotes a user receives. Each new post earns karma+1. However, as the word karma itself suggests, if your marketing efforts on Reddit are too straightforward, or blunt, they might receive numerous downvotes and suffer negative karma consequences. Therefore, it is crucial to thoroughly read the community rules of each subreddit and avoid spamming with promotional posts.
