HSBC UK Bank Acquires SVB UK for £1 Amid the SVB Collapse

HSBC Holdings has disclosed that it is buying Silicon Valley Bank UK Limited (SVB UK) for a mere £1 through its UK-based, separated subsidiary, HSBC UK Bank plc.
SVB UK's lending portfolio stands at roughly £5.5 billion as of 10 March 2023, with deposit holdings of about £6.7 billion. In the financial year ending 31 December 2022, SVB UK reported pre-tax earnings of £88 million. The expected tangible equity of SVB UK is around £1.4 billion.
A final computation of the resulting gain from the purchase will be released in the near future. The assets and liabilities belonging to SVB UK's parent companies are not part of this transaction. The transaction will be funded through existing resources and is effective immediately.
HSBC Group CEO, Noel Quinn, has stated that the acquisition of Silicon Valley Bank UK Limited (SVB UK) by HSBC UK Bank is a sound strategic decision for their UK business. The acquisition will bolster HSBC's commercial banking franchise, which will enable them to better serve rapidly growing and innovative firms, particularly in the technology and life science industries, both domestically and internationally.
"We welcome SVB UK's customers to HSBC and look forward to helping them grow in the UK and around the world. SVB UK customers can continue to bank as usual, safe in the knowledge that their deposits are backed by the strength, safety and security of HSBC. We warmly welcome SVB UK colleagues to HSBC, we are excited to start working with them," Quinn added.
The acquisition comes during a time of growing apprehension regarding the widespread implications of the failure of SVB Financial Group and the United States government's decision not to rescue the corporation.
