IATA to Integrate Digital Currencies in Settlement Systems

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is set to enhance its financial settlement systems by incorporating digital currencies, starting with the digital renminbi in its China Billing and Settlement Plan (BSP) by the end of 2024.
This initiative stems from a request by the China Airline Committee, reflecting a growing trend towards digital currency adoption in the aviation sector. Muhammad Albakri, IATA's senior vice president for financial settlement and distribution services, emphasized the significance of this move. He noted that the integration of the digital renminbi would serve as a foundational step for IATA, facilitating the eventual inclusion of additional digital currencies.
Albakri stated, "As the industry shifts towards digital currencies, it is essential that our financial settlement frameworks evolve to meet the requirements of our stakeholders." The IATA is actively assessing the landscape to determine the viability of other digital currencies in its systems, guided by industry needs.
Earlier in July 2024, IATA made strides in this direction by incorporating the Renminbi Offshore (CNH) into its IATA Currency Clearance Service (ICCS). This service, which manages global cash transactions, now supports 74 different currencies, showcasing IATA's commitment to modernizing its financial operations.
The move towards digital currencies represents a strategic response to the evolving financial ecosystem, positioning IATA at the forefront of innovation in aviation finance. This initiative is expected to streamline transactions and enhance efficiency within the industry.
