Institutional FX Trading Volumes Shows Slight Increase in February 2021

The trading volumes of leading institutional FX and ECN platforms in February have been revealed, generally showing a slight increase, with only two venues reflecting a decline.
The report covers Average Daily Volume (ADV) of institutional FX trading volumes from six major venues, namely Cboe FX, CLS, Euronext FX, FxSpotStream, Integral, Moscow Exchange, PrimeXM and Refinitiv.
Institutional FX volumes reflected a slight increase, from $43.85 billion in January to $45.23 billion in February on average levels. As shown in the chart below, Cboe FX, CLS, Euronext FX, FxSpotStream, Integral and PrimeXM all reported a slight increase in average daily FX trading volumes in February versus January, with only Moscow Exchange and Refinitiv reflecting a decline.

The detailing trading volumes for each venues are as follows:
Cboe Global Markets, Inc. (Cboe: CBOE) reported its February global FX spot trading volume, with $37.356 billions total average daily notional value (ADNV) in 20 trading days, which represents an increase of 6.1 percent compared to January 2021 but a decrease of 9.5 percent compared to the same period in 2020.
CLS saw average daily traded volumes of USD1.94 trillion in February, up 0.9 percent compared to January 2021.
There was also an increase in FX spot volumes of 3 percent. In particular, CLS saw significant increases for USD/JPY and USD/CHF of 14% and 15%, respectively, compared to January 2021.
Compared to February 2020, FX spot volumes decreased by 5% .
Euronext FX’s average daily volumes (ADV) is $21.894 billion in February 2021, which represents an increase of 2.8 percent compared to January 2021 and an decrease of 5.7 percent compared to the same period in 2020.
In February, FxSpotStream’s total figure came in at $992 billion, which was slightly higher from $980 billion in the previous month and also rose by 4 percent on a yearly basis.
February’s average daily volume (ADV) is $49.6 billion, which is higher from $49.0 billion in January 2021 and increased 3.7 percent year-over-year when compared with $47.8 billion in February 2020.
Integral’s average daily volumes (ADV) across Integral platforms totaled $50.4 billion in February 2021, which represents an increase of 10.0% compared to January 2021 and an increase of 26.3% compared to the same period in 2020.
The total trading volumes across Moscow Exchange’s markets In February grew by 3.9% to RUB 72.1 trln (RUB 69.4 in February 2020).
FX Market trading volume was RUB 24.0 trln (February 2020: RUB 24.1 trln), with spot trades growing 7.7% to RUB 7.8 trln and swap trades and forwards totaling RUB 16.2 trln.
The FX Market’s ADTV was RUB 1,198.2 bln (USD 16.1 bln), compared to RUB 1,270.1 bln (USD 19.9 bln) in February 2020.
PrimeXM has recorded a total of $909.89 billion in monthly trading volume in February across the 3 major Data Center locations, which represents a 3% MoM increase in trading activities.
The Average Daily Volume (ADV) in February was $45.49 billion. The highest daily trading volume of the month was registered on 1st February with $67.56 billion turnovers and the total number of trades in February was 28.79 million.
Turnover in all products including cash, forwards, swaps, options and non-deliverable forwards across Refinitiv were reported at $457 billion in February. Of the February’s total figure, $79 billion was FX spot, representing a $2 billion fall when compared to $93 billion in January 2021.
