Interactive Brokers Weighs Stablecoin Integration Amid Shifting Crypto Infrastructure
Interactive Brokers Group is exploring the potential launch of a stablecoin, joining a growing list of financial institutions assessing blockchain-based solutions as regulatory pressure in the U.S. crypto space begins to ease.
Founder Thomas Peterffy confirmed that while the company is studying possible stablecoin issuance, no final decision has been made. The firm is also evaluating mechanisms to enable stablecoin-based funding for brokerage accounts and facilitate 24/7 crypto asset transfers.
While the move reflects broader institutional interest in tokenized assets, Peterffy expressed ongoing skepticism regarding the underlying valuation framework of cryptocurrencies, stating that his support would hinge on whether users consistently ascribe value to such instruments.
Interactive Brokers already offers crypto trading through partnerships with Paxos and Zero Hash, both of which provide infrastructure for digital asset services. The broker is considering whether to support third-party stablecoins for account funding, depending on the credibility of the issuing institutions.
The firm’s recent efforts include the launch of ForecastEx, a prediction market allowing users to trade contracts tied to binary outcomes. Interactive Brokers reported 3.87 million customer accounts as of June, marking a 32% year-on-year increase.
As blockchain infrastructure continues to develop, the company’s involvement signals a measured, infrastructure-focused approach to integrating digital assets within traditional brokerage operations, rather than a direct expansion into crypto-native markets.
