Global biometric payments are poised to skyrocket to $5.8 trillion with three billion users projected by 2026, as forecasted by Goode Intelligence. Last year, JP Morgan initiated its foray into this burgeoning market by announcing its partnership with biometrics specialist PopID to conduct a series of trials aimed at integrating biometric technology into its extensive merchant client network.

Prashant Sharma, the executive director of biometrics and identity solutions at JP Morgan, revealed to Payments Dive that the bank is gearing up for further experimentation this year, paving the way for a broader implementation in the near future. "We would like every merchant to adopt this, but at the end of the day, it is going to be a merchant's choice," Sharma emphasized.

Despite perceived concerns surrounding the use of biometrics, Sharma remains confident in its potential, stating, "We just don't see this as a big risk." Regarding merchant adoption, Sharma outlined the evolving landscape, expressing optimism for the development of all-in-one devices capable of processing card, tap, dip, and biometric data.

In a bid to streamline biometric integration for businesses, Mastercard recently unveiled a service facilitating seamless integration for user authentication and online purchases. Similarly, Visa has collaborated with PopID on facial verification payment solutions. Sharma acknowledges the competitive nature of the market but underscores the potential for collaboration among providers. "There are a lot of places where we can collaborate as well," he noted.

As the trajectory of biometric payments continues to ascend, institutions like JP Morgan are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of financial transactions worldwide.
