Judge Denies Coinbase's Request to Dismiss Lawsuit

A U.S. judge has partially denied Coinbase's request to dismiss a class action lawsuit filed by shareholders who claim the exchange misled them about its regulatory risks. The lawsuit, initiated in 2022, accuses Coinbase of making materially false and misleading statements regarding the likelihood of regulatory action by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Judge Brian Martinotti ruled that while the plaintiffs have presented a plausible case that Coinbase acted negligently regarding its regulatory risks, many of their other allegations were not substantiated.
The court document indicates that the plaintiffs adequately alleged Coinbase misrepresented the improbability of an SEC enforcement action. In June 2023, Coinbase was sued by the SEC, alleging violations of U.S. federal securities laws.
Coinbase's spokesperson commented, "the Court agreed that a significant portion of the plaintiff's claims should be dismissed," and expressed confidence in their position as the legal proceedings continue.
