Prediction market operator Kalshi has closed all markets related to conservative activist Charlie Kirk following his assassination on Wednesday during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University.

Kirk, 31, was shot in the neck while speaking on stage at "The American Comeback Tour" in Orem. Witnesses reported chaos in the auditorium as attendees rushed for cover.

Kalshi, which allows traders to buy contracts on outcomes of real-world events, had previously offered markets ranging from whether Kirk would run for office by 2029 to whether he would debate commentator Nick Fuentes. Another lighthearted market speculated on how many episodes of South Park would reference him via the character Eric Cartman.

Following news of the shooting, Kalshi voided all trades placed after 2:20 p.m. on Wednesday, when the first reports of the incident surfaced. "We are deeply saddened by today's tragic news about Charlie Kirk," the platform posted on its community forum, confirming the shutdown.

Kalshi, regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), has grown in popularity since the 2024 U.S. presidential election after winning a court battle to expand its offerings. While its contracts cover politics, sports, economics, and culture, U.S. law prohibits platforms from running markets on assassinations or wars.

The tragedy underscores the regulatory sensitivity surrounding prediction markets. Rival operator Polymarket, which is barred from serving U.S. customers, reportedly shut down a controversial market earlier this year on whether a U.S. civil war would break out in 2025.
