The Kenyan Revenue Authority (KRA) has proposed a real-time taxation system integrated with cryptocurrency exchanges to better track transactions for tax purposes. The initiative aims to capture essential transaction details, such as time and value, as part of the country's efforts to regulate cryptocurrency and improve tax collection efficiency.

Currently, the KRA faces challenges in monitoring crypto transactions, leading to revenue losses. According to Section 3 of Kenya's Income Tax Act, cryptocurrency income is taxable, yet the existing system struggles to track such activity.

"The goal is a robust and efficient system for effective and efficient collection of taxes on cryptocurrency," said a KRA representative. The proposal is also seen as a reflection of Kenya's growing role in the African cryptocurrency landscape, with high levels of usage across the country.

In addition to real-time transaction monitoring, the KRA is considering the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to detect tax evasion, further improving transparency and operational efficiency. Kenya is also planning to implement mobile network operator M-Pesa paybills and till numbers as virtual tax registers by December 2024.

However, these reforms have sparked opposition, particularly from younger Kenyans, with some attributing recent protests to the government's proposed tax hikes and reforms, which aim to improve its financial standing.
