Khan Bank adopts microservices with Apache Cassandra

Source: IBS Intelligence
Mongolia’s Khan Bank is partnering with US data management firm DataStax to deliver and carry out new digital services across the bank’s operations. The implementation uses Apache Cassandra™ and DataStax Enterprise to modernise the bank’s IT infrastructure across its retail and digital banking services.
Khan Bank wanted to re-architect its applications to take advantage of microservices application designs, as well as implement an operational data layer to support this process. Moving to microservices helps the bank meet its goals for expanding customer services faster, supporting data growth and making integration across application stacks easier.
Sachin Nair, CIO at Khan Bank, said: “At Khan Bank, our business must maintain sustainable growth and sound profits, and we need a broad vision that consistently engages in new ideas. For our IT strategy, our approach to digital transformation relies on being able to implement agile software development and microservices. We had to re-architect these applications so that we could take advantage of those changes over time. This was essential as we faced a year-on-year growth in the volume of data we hold of around 70%. We decided on Cassandra as the database for our new operational data layer, and that DataStax would be the best partner to support our shift.”
Khan Bank is embarking on an ambitious digital transformation journey, based on being more customer centric.
Simon Molenberg, GM of APAC for DataStax, said: “The move to digital banking services is a worldwide phenomenon and Khan Bank’s approach is leading the market in Mongolia. As banking enterprises want to conduct more transactions securely and easily over the Internet, providing services faster is essential. DataStax helps organizations like Khan Bank make the move to microservices, helping them manage their customer data effectively.”
Khan Bank, with 537 branches nationwide, is the largest commercial bank in Mongolia, providing banking services to an estimated 70% of Mongolian families. Originally established in 1991 as the Agricultural Cooperative Bank, in connection with the dissolution of the State Bank of Mongolia. After a rocky few years, in 2003 the bank was successfully privatised through international tender. Sawada Holdings, the majority shareholder, acquired 100% of the bank’s shares and subsequently sold 40% of the shares to Tavan Bogd Trade Ltd in 2006, and the bank’s name was officially changed to Khan Bank LLC.
Khan Bank holds a banking license, issued by the Bank of Mongolia on 11 November 2006, and operates under regulations relating to banks and the opening of branches approved by Bank of Mongolia Governor’s Decree 375, dated 2000, in compliance with the Mongolian Law on Banks’ Article 17, provision 2.
