Klarna Eyes IPO Amid Market Uncertainty and Strategic Expansion

Klarna, the Swedish buy now, pay later (BNPL) firm, is reportedly preparing for a public listing later this year, contingent on favorable market conditions. According to a memo obtained by Sky News, the company is targeting a September or October IPO, though no final decision has been confirmed.
The fintech unicorn previously paused its listing plans in April due to geopolitical and economic volatility, including trade tensions linked to former President Donald Trump's tariff measures. The anticipated valuation at that time was around $15 billion, with Klarna reportedly aiming to raise $1 billion.
The company has recently signaled broader ambitions beyond BNPL services. Having secured an Electronic Money Institution (EMI) license from the UK's Financial Conduct Authority, Klarna is poised to expand into retail banking - an area that could reshape its business model and investor appeal.
While Klarna has not officially commented on the IPO timing, industry observers see the licensing milestone as a significant step toward market diversification, which may strengthen the company's positioning ahead of any public offering. Whether the listing proceeds will depend on economic signals and investor sentiment in the months ahead.
