Kraken Poised to Acquire NinjaTrader in $1.5 Billion Deal

Kraken, one of the world's leading cryptocurrency exchanges, is reportedly in the final stages of acquiring NinjaTrader, a prominent U.S.-based futures trading platform, for approximately $1.5 billion.
This deal would mark a major step for Kraken as it seeks to expand its offerings in the U.S. market, particularly in cryptocurrency futures and derivatives trading. By acquiring NinjaTrader, a firm regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), Kraken could gain the necessary regulatory foothold to offer these products domestically.
Founded in 2003, NinjaTrader serves over 1.8 million customers with a suite of futures trading tools. Kraken's interest in the platform is primarily driven by its established regulatory status, which would allow the crypto exchange to integrate crypto derivatives trading within the U.S., a market where regulatory constraints have traditionally posed challenges for such offerings.
If the acquisition goes through, NinjaTrader is expected to maintain its independent brand identity while benefiting from Kraken's extensive global reach. Reports also suggest that Kraken plans to leverage this acquisition for international expansion, with potential growth into the UK, Europe, and Australia.
This move follows Kraken's recent strategic expansions, including its acquisition of a Cypriot firm to obtain a Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID) license, enabling derivatives trading across the European Economic Area. Additionally, Kraken recently secured an Electronic Money Institution (EMI) license from the UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), further cementing its position in the UK market.
The potential deal comes at a pivotal moment for Kraken, which recently saw the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) drop its lawsuit against the exchange. It also aligns with Kraken's broader ambitions, as previous reports indicated the company's interest in acquiring Deribit, a leading crypto options exchange.
