Kraken Re-enters Australian Market with Crypto Derivatives after Regulatory Setback

Source: Chow

f0da9ecaeae0c16bcab766c07c2a927.jpegKraken has officially returned to the Australian market, offering crypto-based derivatives products following a previous regulatory issue with the local financial authorities. The US-based crypto exchange faced a setback after the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) accused it of violating rules by offering fiat-backed margin trading. The court upheld the regulator's stance, ruling that Kraken's fiat products had breached local laws. However, crypto-based derivatives, which were not part of the violations, were left unaffected by the ruling.

Now, Kraken is re-establishing its presence by launching its derivatives platform for Australian wholesale clients, under the oversight of a licensed Australian financial services entity. The platform will offer a wide array of trading options, with over 200 tradable assets, and will support multiple collateral types, including fiat, stablecoins, and crypto.

Jonathon Miller, Kraken's General Manager for Australia and the Rest of the World, emphasized the demand among institutional clients for advanced trading strategies backed by the company's high-security standards. This move signifies Kraken's ongoing commitment to regulatory compliance in the region, as it positions itself to meet institutional demand for crypto assets.

In addition to its Australian expansion, Kraken has also made strides internationally, recently launching a global derivatives platform regulated by the Bermuda Monetary Authority and acquiring Dutch broker BCM. However, Kraken is still dealing with a legal battle in the US with the Securities and Exchange Commission over allegations of operating an unregistered securities exchange and mishandling customer funds.

Despite these challenges, Kraken remains focused on providing institutional-grade services to clients, reaffirming its commitment to the global cryptocurrency market.
