Leverage trading is a cornerstone notion and a driving factor in the retail forex market, which has seen rapid growth in recent years. This expansion can be ascribed to factors such as low transaction costs, the increasing popularity of online trading platforms, and the ease of mobile trading.

Leverage trading allows traders to borrow funds from brokers, allowing them to execute larger currency bets and, as a result, increase their earnings when foreign exchange rates move in their favor. Leverage trading has become synonymous with forex trading because it allows traders to leverage the power of OPM (Other People's Money).

UAE Market, the Rising Star in Leverage Trading

However, not all retail leverage trading markets are thriving, as a significant drop has been observed in a number of countries this year. This trend is influenced by regulatory changes, market saturation, and economic instability. The United Kingdom, for example, has seen a 25% reduction in traders since May 2022, with a total of 205,000 traders. Similarly, in the United States, the number of traders has declined by 24%. Other countries, such as Australia, Germany, Spain, France, and Singapore, have experienced large decreases in trader numbers ranging from 9% to 19%.

The Middle East, particularly the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is an exception to this worldwide trend, with a thriving retail leverage trading sector. According to Investment Trends, the number of traders in the UAE has increased by 9% this year, reaching approximately 50,000. This puts the UAE ahead of other major markets like Spain (47,000), Singapore (43,000), and France (33,500). Among these UAE traders, 18,500 are newcomers who started trading during the last year, while 7,000 are reactivated traders who returned to the market after a break.

A number of variables, including as the appeal of learning a new skillset, the simplicity of trading with small sums of money, and the heightened volatility seen in the post-Covid environment, can be attributed to the rise of UAE traders. The global pandemic and its aftermath have disrupted several markets, offering traders opportunities as well as risks. Trading confidence and optimism are particularly strong among UAE traders, which may motivate them to engage in more frequent and aggressive trading.

Competition Among Brokers Intensifies and Client Turnover Rate is Higher

The growth in the UAE market also portends increasing broker rivalry. Only 37% of primary trading contacts are currently held by the top three brokers, a significant decrease from 45% in May 2022. New and smaller brokers have entered the market, competing for a larger market share. Additionally, traders are showing a larger propensity to change brokers in pursuit of more practical features and superior services.

Brokers must understand the elements that are most crucial to their clients' demands and provide solutions that are specifically suited to meet those needs. Additionally, they should use social media platforms to their advantage as a powerful tool for attracting and keeping clients. When opening accounts with current brokers, word-of-mouth referrals are still a common motivator for clients, while social media is quickly dominating the referral market. Brokers should also give priority to their clients' education and support, especially new and reactivated traders who may need extra direction and help along the way.
