Listen to the Article: How Brokers and Prop Firms Redefine Algo Trading as Gen-AI Rises

Algorithmic trading, or algo trading, is not something new among forex brokers and the newly emerged prop firms. However, the explosive growth of OpenAI's ChatGPT and generative AI technology as a whole at the end of 2022 has led to a parallel surge in interest in algo trading among forex market participants.
Algorithmic Trading vs. Automated Trading: What's the Difference?
Algo trading, also known as automated trading or black-box trading, involves using computer programs to follow specific instructions or algorithms for executing trades. These systems can trade at speeds and frequencies far beyond human capabilities. In the forex market, this often involves using Expert Advisors (EAs) on the MT4, which automatically open and close positions, calculate risk levels, and manage position sizes based on predefined algorithms without direct human intervention.
EAs can significantly enhance trading performance by instantly analyzing historical data and employing mathematical and statistical models to evaluate the forex market. While the terms "algorithmic" and "automated" trading are often used interchangeably, there is a technical distinction between the two.
In forex trading, algo is a method of breaking down large orders into smaller ones to minimize the cost and market impact of executing big trades. Automated trading, on the other hand, involves using specialized software or predefined rules and strategies to make and execute trading decisions. Essentially, automated trading involves bots acting as traders to enter and exit trades, whereas algo trading employs algorithms to split large orders for execution with minimal market disruption.
How Generative AI is Transforming Algorithmic Trading
As Fazzaco mentioned in the year-end forecast, A 2024 Pan-Financial Industry Outlook, the year 2024 heralds a seismic shift in the financial cosmos - a phenomenon aptly termed the generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) Revolution, indicating a new era in the realm of forex. Within this dynamic upheaval, the bedrock of transformation lies in the omnipotent reign of AI, reshaping the contours of FX trading and altering the very fabric of forex dynamics.
The rise of genAI has undoubtedly sparked renewed enthusiasm for algo trading. Even before the advent of AI, brokers were programming algorithms on platforms like MT4. However, the integration of AI is revolutionary, offering brokers and prop firms new opportunities to redefine it.
The AI boom has significantly increased participation in algo trading. For instance, if you visit the "Algo Trading" community on Reddit, it has grown to 1.7 million members. Many of these are now engaged in coding, creating a ripple reaction of innovation and participation.
GenAI has also expanded the base of programmers. People who previously knew little about coding can now generate useful (if not always perfect) code by learning to input the right prompts. Consequently, AI serves as a powerful catalyst, driving brokers and prop firms to redefine their approach to algo trading on MT4 and other platforms alike.
What Does the Future Hold?
In recent years, beyond the AI-driven transformation of algo trading and automated trading as a whole, markets traditionally reliant on manual operations, such as those in North America and Europe, are seeing a growing interest in automation. This suggests that brokers will see a significant expansion in this area.
Demographically speaking, AI has empowered more ordinary users to define automated strategies, leading to increased automation in the retail trading market. In the future, the majority of forex brokers' trading flow is expected to come from automated trading systems.
