OpenAI, one of the leading firms in AI, has undergone a series of dramas recently. Following Fazzaco's report on its former CEO Sam Altman joining Microsoft, it was surprising to hear on Tuesday that Altman would resume his role as OpenAI's CEO.

Latest Developments:

As of November 22, OpenAI and Sam Altman announced a resolution on X, committing to continued collaboration for advancing AI. This came as a surprise, given that just days earlier, the OpenAI board had dismissed Altman and Greg Brockman.

To date, the OpenAI website hasn't updated with the latest information. It only posted the November 17 personnel changes, including former Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor and former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers joining the board. Taylor will serve as chairman, and Quora's co-founder and CEO Adam D'Angelo will continue as a director.

OpenAI indicated ongoing discussions on specific collaboration details on X. Altman stated, "With the new board and Satya's (Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella) support, I'm looking forward to returning to OpenAI and building on our strong partnership with Microsoft." Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella responded on X, saying, "We believe this is a first essential step on a path to more stable, well-informed, and effective governance. Sam, Greg, and I have talked and agreed they have a key role to play along with the OAI leadership team in ensuring OAI continues to thrive and build on its mission. We look forward to building on our strong partnership and delivering the value of this next generation of AI to our customers and partners."

Background of OpenAI Drama

Sam Altman has been leading OpenAI's AI research and product development since 2019. Founded in 2015 as a non-profit, OpenAI garnered support from prominent investors and entrepreneurs like Altman himself, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, and Elon Musk. The release of ChatGPT in late 2022 drew global attention and discussions.

However, on November 17, 2023, the OpenAI board suddenly announced a series of personnel changes, including the dismissal of Altman and Greg Brockman. This decision surprised and discontented many, raising questions about why the board swiftly removed key executives, including the CEO.

The core issue behind this drama revolves around why the board hastily ousted Altman and other executives. Musk injected substantial funds into OpenAI but demanded to become CEO to expedite research on generative AI offerings. Altman declined, leading to funding issues for subsequent GPT launch. Consequently, OpenAI established the profit entity, OpenAI Global, speeding up commercialization. However, this rapid commercialization displeased other board members, especially Ilya Sutskever, the company's Chief Scientist. Sutskever, a Russian-born Canadian computer scientist specializing in machine learning, prioritizes AI safety over profitability. The disagreements on AI safety, OpenAI's tech pace, and commercialization triggered this turmoil.

Root Cause: Dysfunctional Board Structure and Market Outlook for AI

The removal of Sam Altman by Ilya Sutskever possibly stems from OpenAI's bizarre board structure. Altman established the profit entity, OpenAI Global, yet it remains under the control of the non-profit entity. As the board is of a non-profit organization, each director must fulfill a trustee role, advancing the mission of safe and beneficial AGI (Artificial General Intelligence). While the for-profit subsidiary can earn and distribute profits, it must align with this mission. The primary beneficiaries of the non-profit organization are humanity, not OpenAI investors.

Thus, amid disagreements and an irregular company structure, Ilya Sutskever and several directors succeeded in removing the CEO.

The internal upheaval at OpenAI, a leading entity in the global AI industry, undoubtedly attracts significant market attention. People attempt to comprehend this event's impact on the AI industry. However, as of now, no institution accurately assesses its repercussions or even confirms the event's conclusion. Nevertheless, the market remains optimistic about the future of AI. Some analysts suggest that, post this drama, the AI domain might split into conservative and progressive factions.
