MOEX Reports December 2024 Trading Volumes

Moscow Exchange (MOEX) reported total trading volumes of RUB 142.3 trillion across its markets in December 2024. Throughout the year, the exchange focused on developing new tools and services for brokers, asset managers, and banks serving both retail and institutional investors.
In the equities market, trading volume in shares, depositary receipts (DRs), and investment fund units reached RUB 3.8 trillion, with an average daily trading volume (ADTV) of RUB 170.9 billion. MOEX hosted 13 initial public offerings (IPOs) and four secondary public offerings (SPOs) in 2024, raising a total of RUB 87.5 billion. Two additional Russian companies also secured dual listings on the exchange. The exchange expanded its ETF offerings with 25 new products targeting equities, bonds, and money market instruments, bringing the total to 79 ETFs from 17 asset management companies. Money market ETFs saw significant growth, with net asset value increasing 4.4 times to over RUB 1 trillion.
The bonds market saw a turnover of RUB 4.3 trillion in corporate, regional, and sovereign bonds, with an ADTV of RUB 196.2 billion. In December alone, 130 new bond issues were placed, totaling RUB 3.3 trillion. For the full year, 78 new debt issuers entered the market, placing RUB 242 billion. A total of 247 companies placed 759 bond issues for RUB 8.44 trillion, excluding overnight bonds.
Trading volumes in the derivatives market reached RUB 11.9 trillion, with an ADTV of RUB 541.4 billion. Thirty-five new instruments based on equities, base metals, and international indices were introduced, generating a total trading volume of RUB 95 billion, with cocoa futures being the most popular.
Money market turnover reached RUB 110.0 trillion, with an ADTV of RUB 5 trillion. CCP-cleared repo transactions reached RUB 40.1 trillion, including the GCC repo segment, which totaled RUB 39.8 trillion. MOEX facilitated repo with the central counterparty (CCP) throughout the year, extending the tenor of negotiated repo transactions with the CCP to one year for all trading boards. Open interest in long-term repos grew to RUB 2.5 trillion, representing 27% of the overall open interest in CCP-cleared repos. MOEX also upgraded on-demand repo features and expanded eligible collateral to include mortgage-backed securities.
