Crypto payments firm MoonPay has acquired blockchain-based e-commerce platform Helio Pay for approximately $170 million. Helio Pay supports over 6,000 e-commerce merchants and content creators, enabling payments in Bitcoin, Ether, stablecoins like USD Coin, and other cryptocurrencies. A key integration is Solana Pay on Shopify, a platform with over 138 million monthly users. Helio has processed over $1.5 billion in transactions across e-commerce, digital goods, and subscriptions.

The acquisition is projected to increase MoonPay's trading and marketplace volume. Helio's integrations with platforms like Discord and WooCommerce will allow MoonPay to offer more payment solutions to merchants, developers, and consumers. Helio co-founder and CEO Stijn Paumen stated that the acquisition will enable MoonPay to replace "slow, costly merchant payments with fast, affordable, and decentralized solutions."

This acquisition follows MoonPay's recent regulatory advancements, including securing approval in December 2024 to operate as a licensed crypto business in the Netherlands under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework.

MoonPay, often called the "PayPal for crypto," provides infrastructure for crypto payments, allowing users to buy and sell digital assets using various methods, including debit and credit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. The initial interest in acquiring Helio was reported in December 2024 with an initial valuation of $150 million. The transaction will expand MoonPay's merchant services and customer base, which currently includes over 20 million users in over 160 countries.
