Moscow Exchange Posts 5.2% Rise in Total Trading Volumes in May 2022

Moscow Exchange, the largest exchange group in Russia, has released key trading metrics for May 2022, reporting a 5.2% rise in total trading volumes to RUB 78.2 trln, compared with RUB 74.3 in May 2021. However, the exchange still saw declines in significant data.

  • For the Equity & Bond Market, the trading volume totaled RUB 995.4 bln, down from RUB 3,380.7 bln in May 2021. Detailed metrics in this market, excluding overnight bonds, are as follows: 

  • Trading volume in shares, DRs and investment fund units was RUB 596.9 bln (May 2021: RUB 2,162.3 bln). ADTV was RUB 33.2 bln (May 2021: RUB 108.1 bln).

  • Trading volume in corporate, regional and sovereign bonds was RUB 398.5 bln (May 2021: RUB 1,218.4 bln). ADTV was RUB 22.1 bln (May 2021: RUB 60.9 bln).

  • 24 new bond issues with a combined value of RUB 278.5 bln (of which overnight bonds accounted for RUB 196.0 bln) were placed in May 2022.

Moreover, Derivatives Market volumes was RUB 5.6 trln, down from RUB 10.4 trln in May 2021 and turnover in precious metals (spot and swaps) was RUB 4.1 bln, down from RUB 21.2 bln in May 2021.

In terms of the FX Market, the exchange reported a trading volume of RUB 16.1 trln, a decline from RUB 26.0 trln in May 2021, with spot trades amounting to RUB 7.7 trln and swap trades and forwards totaling 8.4 trln.

By contrast, Money Market turnover grew 61.9% to RUB 55.4 trln and the FX spot market witnessed a 22.4% increase, both leading the growth in this month.

In April, Moscow Exchange reported a decline in both FX market and total trading volumes. Compared with last month, the financial results in May foreboded good momentum in future growth.
