Moscow Exchange Registers 31.1% YoY Growth in Total Trading Volume for January 2024

Moscow Exchange (MOEX), the largest exchange group in Russia, has released its key trading metrics for January 2024, registering a total trading volume of RUB 107.9 trillion (trln), 31.1% higher than RUB 82.3 trln in January 2023 and 22.7% lower than RUB 139.6 trln in December 2023.

Equity & Bond Market
Total trading volume on the Equity and Bond Market in January to RUB 2.9 trln, jumping 81.3% compared to RUB 1.6 trln in the same period of 2023, hereinafter excluding overnight bonds.
Trading volume in shares, DRs and investment fund units was RUB 1.8 trln, soaring 125.0% compared to RUB 0.8 trln in the year-ago month. ADTV was RUB 85.7 billion (bln), an increase of 128.5% compared to RUB 37.5 bln in January 2023.
Turnover in corporate, regional and sovereign bonds was RUB 1.1 trln, rising 37.5% from RUB 0.8 trln in January 2023. ADTV rose by 34.6% from RUB 38.7 bln to RUB 52.1 bln on a year-on-year basis.
45 bond issues with a combined value of RUB 2.1 trln (of which overnight bonds accounted for RUB 1.6 trln) were placed.
Derivatives Market
The trading volume was RUB 6.6 trln, up 88.6% compared to RUB 3.5 trln in January 2023. ADTV was RUB 312.8 bln, jumping 87.9% compared to RUB 166.5 bln in last January.
FX Market
The trading volume was RUB 27.4 trln, up 62.1% YoY (January 2023: RUB 16.9 trln), with spot trades amounting to RUB 8.9 trln and swap trades and forwards totaling RUB 18.6 trln.
ADTV increased by 62.5% from RUB 0.8 trln in January 2023 to RUB 1.3 trln for the month.
Money Market
Money Market turnover was RUB 69.3 trln, 16.9% higher than RUB 59.3 trln in January 2023. ADTV was RUB 3.3 trln, an increase of 17.9% compared to RUB 2.8 trln in the same period of 2023.
The CCP-cleared repo segment reached RUB 30.8 trln, including the GCC repo segment which totalled RUB 19.4 trln.
Precious Metals Market
Turnover in precious metals (spot and swaps) was RUB 40.9 bln (January 2023: RUB 12.1 bln), of which RUB 40.4 bln (7.0 t) was gold and RUB 0.5 bln (6.4 t) was silver.
