Moscow Exchange Reports YoY Increase in Trading Volume Across Markets for October 2023

Moscow Exchange, the largest exchange group in Russia, has released its key trading metrics for October 2023, reporting total trading volumes across its markets of RUB 135.5 trillion (trln), a significant increase of 89.0% compared to RUB 71.7 trln in October 2022.

Unless stated otherwise, all figures below refer to performance for August 2023 and all comparisons are with the same period last year.

Equity & Bond Market

• In October 2023, total trading volume on the Equity and Bond Market was RUB 4,829.5 bln, increasing by 147.2% compared to RUB 1,953.6 bln in October 2022, hereinafter excluding overnight bonds.

• Trading volume in shares, DRs and investment fund units totaled RUB 2,241.5 bln, 122.3% higher than RUB 1,008.3 bln in October 2022. ADTV was RUB 101.9 bln (October 2022: RUB 48.0 bln).

• Turnover in corporate, regional and sovereign bonds totaled RUB 2,588.0 bln, rising by 173.8% from RUB 945.3 bln in October 2022. ADTV was RUB 117.6 bln (October 2022: RUB 45.0 bln).

• 80 bond issues with a combined value of RUB 3,395.1 bln (of which overnight bonds accounted for RUB 2,696.6 bln) were placed in October 2023.

Derivatives Market

• Derivatives Market trading volume grew by 144.4% to RUB 8.8 trln (October 2022: RUB 3.6 trln). 

• ADTV was RUB 400.0 bln (October 2022: RUB 169.1 bln).

FX Market

• ​FX Market trading volume totaled to RUB 32.9 trln, up 120.8% YoY (October 2022: RUB 14.9 trln). Spot trading volumes were RUB 11.4 trln, and swap trades and forwards were RUB 21.5 trln.

• ADTV was RUB 1,494.3 bln, an increase of 110.4% compared to RUB 710.3 bln in October 2022.

Money Market

• Money Market turnover rose by 72.3% to RUB 86.3 trln (October 2022: RUB 50.1 trln). ADTV was RUB 3,921.4 bln (October 2022: RUB 2,386.1 bln).

• The CCP-cleared repo segment was RUB 40.1 trln, including the GCC repo segment was RUB 25.9 trln.

Precious Metals Market

• Turnover in precious metals (spot and swaps) totaled RUB 63.8 bln, up 496.3% on a YoY basis (October 2022: RUB 10.7 bln), of which RUB 62.7 bln (10.7 t) was gold and RUB 1.1 bln (14.3 t) was silver.
