Nasdaq Saw A Surge in Equity Derivatives Volume in June 2021

Nasdaq, a global technology company serving the capital markets and other industries, published its trading volume metrics for June, as well as quarterly volumes, estimated revenue capture, number of listings and index statistics for the quarter ended June 30, 2021.

According to the report, the U.S. equity options volume reached 286 millions of contracts in June, which is up from the number posted in the last month of 247 and posted in the same period in last year of 230. The company also saw a surge in the volume of European options and futures in June, which hit 5.7 millions of contracts, up from the number posted in the last month of 5.3.

For the Cash Equities market, the US matched equity volume for June was 42,389 million of shares traded, representing a significant surge from May's figure of 36,467. But the European equity volume saw a decline in the month, reaching $96.3 billion, which is down from the number hit in May of $100.8 billion.

Moving onto the Fixed-Income and Commodities market, the US fixed-income volume for June was $603 billion traded, up from $566 billion in last month. And European fixed income witnessed 3.3 million of contracts traded for the month, which represented another surge compared with the previous month's number of 2.5 million of contracts.

In the 2nd quarter of 2021, the exchange operator saw a decline in terms of market share for the U.S. equity options, which decreased to 35.9% from the previous figure of 36.5% in the 1st quarter. 

Last month, Fazzaco reported that Nasdaq witnessed a a slight month on month dip for equity derivatives markets for the month of May. The trading volume of US equity options in May fell to 247 million contracts compared to the previous month's 249 million contracts.
