NatWest announced the launch of its new online payment service, Payit by NatWest, today. The new payment option will enable customers to make instant online payments to retailers without the need for a debit or a credit card. The service, Payit, uses Open Banking infrastructure to allow UK banks’ customers to pay for services provided by the retailers who use the payment option.
The payment service has been built in partnership with Pollinate and Endava. Payit will also be offered by accountancy software provider, FreeAgent on its online and mobile platforms for allowing customers to make instant payments from any bank or building society.
Paul Thwaite, CEO, Commercial Banking at NatWest said, “As the largest supporter of UK businesses, we are thrilled to launch Payit by NatWest, allowing mid to larger businesses with an online presence to accept payments directly from their customers’ bank accounts in near real-time, providing them with an effortless and safe payment experience. We are especially pleased to have used Open Banking technology to achieve this, allowing customers of the UK’s main banks to use this new payment option. Payit joins our growing portfolio of digital innovations for businesses, showing NatWest’s commitment to helping them thrive and achieve their potential.”
According to NatWest, customers from nine other UK banks will be eligible for using the service by selecting the Payit button on the merchant’s payment page followed by the selection of the bank they want to pay from. The user will then be directed to their bank’s app or online banking for payment completion. The company has stated that the service will soon begin to allow merchants to process refunds.
