The Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (Hong Kong Stock Exchange) announced that it will launch silver futures contracts denominated in US dollars and offshore RMB (Hong Kong) on June 8, 2020 , to further enrich its variety of commodity derivatives.
The newly launched silver futures contract is similar to the existing gold futures contract of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The contract month includes the spot month and the subsequent 11 calendar months , and is delivered in kind in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Stock Exchange will waive the transaction fee and settlement fee for the first six months of trading of new products, and will also be exempt from the CSRC levy during this period.
Hong Kong is a physical trading hub for silver in Asia. The launch of silver futures contracts will expand the range of existing metal products of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, provide more trading, hedging and asset allocation tools for Asian market participants, and further consolidate Hong Kong’s role as an international financial center status.
In July 2017, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange successfully launched the first pair of physically settled USD gold futures and RMB (Hong Kong) gold futures contracts. The silver futures contract launched in the Hong Kong market can also complement the existing precious metal products under the LMEprecious program of the London Metal Exchange, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, to provide more options for international silver market participants.
