Nomura Reports Strong First Quarter for FY25 with Record Earnings

Nomura Holdings, Japan's largest brokerage and investment bank, has updated its report for the fiscal year 2025, which shows a stellar performance for the first quarter. The bank's net income for the period exceeded 68.9 billion yen ($428 million), representing more than a threefold increase compared to the same quarter last year.
The impressive results were driven by robust performances across Nomura's three core business segments. The combined pretax income for these segments reached 86.6 billion yen, up 12% from the previous quarter and tripling the amount reported a year ago. This performance marks the fifth consecutive quarter of growth for these divisions.
The Wealth Management division was a standout performer, delivering its best quarterly results in nine years. Pretax income surged 84% year-on-year to 42.3 billion yen, fueled by record-high recurring revenue assets and revenues. Nomura attributed this success to its segment-based approach to client services, which has effectively driven growth in recurring revenue.
In the Investment Management division, assets under management soared to an all-time high of 92.5 trillion yen. This segment saw a dramatic increase in pretax income, which rose to 23.2 billion yen, marking a 6.4-fold increase from the previous year. Notably, the management of alternative assets exceeded 2 trillion yen, underscoring Nomura's expanding footprint in private markets.
The Wholesale division continued to perform strongly, with pretax income rising 3% quarter-on-quarter to 21.1 billion yen. Despite facing a slowdown in Investment Banking activities, attributed to fewer deals and seasonal factors in Japan, the division benefited from solid results in Spread Products and Equities.
