Norway's Wealth Fund to Investigate Its Crypto and Gambling Investments for Ethical Compliance

Norway's sovereign wealth fund, the largest in the world, is set to conduct investigations into its own investments in cryptocurrency exchanges and gambling companies in 2025. This scrutiny will be part of the fund's ongoing commitment to ethical investing as outlined by the nation's parliament. The fund currently holds stakes in notable firms, including Coinbase and Flutter Entertainment, and is expected to assess whether these companies adhere to its strict ethical guidelines. The focus will be on the potential risks associated with cryptocurrency and gambling operations.
Among the fund's investments are a 0.83% stake in Coinbase, valued at approximately $453 million, and substantial holdings in gambling entities such as Flutter Entertainment and MGM Resorts, with stakes worth $691 million and $121 million, respectively. The council has indicated that ethical breaches in these sectors could lead to divestment recommendations.
While companies like Nike and Adidas are under review for their labor practices, the emphasis on the crypto and gambling sectors marks a significant shift in the fund's oversight strategy. The council stated that firms must take direct responsibility for the working conditions they create, reinforcing that any major ethical violations could result in exclusion from the fund's portfolio.
The Council on Ethics will present its findings to the central bank's board, which often follows the council's recommendations regarding divestments. The time required to divest from a company can vary, with the process designed to minimize market disruption. The outcome of these investigations, particularly concerning the ethical practices of crypto and gambling firms, remains uncertain as the council prepares to delve deeper into these sectors next year.
