OKX Expands European Footprint with Key License Acquisition

Global crypto exchange OKX has announced the acquisition of a Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID II) licensed entity, a move that significantly bolsters its operational capabilities within Europe. The announcement was made at a private event in Malta, where the acquired entity is expected to be based and become operational later this year, pending regulatory approval from the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA).
This strategic acquisition of a MiFID II license will enable OKX to offer regulated derivative products and services to institutional clients across the European Economic Area (EEA), encompassing all 30 EU member states. According to OKX, this step is a key part of its strategy to enhance regulatory compliance and expand its reach in established financial markets.
Erald Ghoos, CEO of OKX Europe, highlighted the importance of the license. "Securing a MiFID II license marks a significant milestone in our mission to integrate digital assets with traditional financial markets," Ghoos stated. He emphasized the company's commitment to "regulatory compliance, security, and innovation" within the European market. Ghoos further explained the license will allow OKX to "deliver institutional-grade services, partner with tier 1 financial institutions, and offer regulated investment solutions."
This development follows OKX's earlier achievement in January, where it secured a full MiCA license. The MiCA license already enables OKX to offer a broad suite of localized services throughout the EU, including spot and OTC trading, and access to over 240 cryptocurrencies. OKX President Hong Fang also commented on this latest license acquisition, stating, "Obtaining a MiFID II license aligns with our mission to make regulated crypto products accessible across Europe, underscoring our dedication to responsible expansion with regulatory compliance at the forefront."
