OpenAI has publicly clarified its non-involvement in a token giveaway by neobroker Robinhood this week, stating that the "OpenAI tokens" distributed to European users do not represent equity in the company.

In a social media post on Wednesday, OpenAI explicitly stated, "We are not involved in this and do not endorse it. Any transfer of OpenAI equity requires our approval - we did not approve any transfer. Please be careful."

The clarification followed Robinhood's promotional campaign on Monday, which offered $5 worth of tokenized OpenAI and SpaceX shares to eligible EU customers. Robinhood later explained that these tokens provide "indirect exposure to private markets" through ownership stakes in special purpose vehicles (SPVs), emphasizing that they do not equate to actual equity or voting rights in the underlying companies.

The situation drew criticism from Elon Musk, co-founder of OpenAI, who reportedly commented on X that Robinhood's "equity" was "fake." This incident highlights a broader trend of blurring lines between traditional finance and crypto, as Robinhood expands its tokenized real-world asset (RWA) trading.

Johann Kerbrat, GM and SVP of Robinhood Crypto, framed the move as part of the firm's effort to expand access to traditionally exclusive asset classes, stating, "These tokens allow retail investors to gain access to private markets that have historically been off-limits." Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev, speaking at an event in Cannes, France, referred to crypto as "the backbone of the future financial system," adding that "Tokenization allows us to rethink access, ownership, and value transfer across borders and asset classes."
