PayPal and Venmo Suffer Major Outage, Leaving Thousands Unable to Access Services

Starting around 11:18 a.m. EDT, the outage caused login failures, blocked balance views, and halted transactions, including peer-to-peer transfers, online purchases, and bill payments. Over 8,000 reports flooded DownDetector at the peak, with some users still facing issues into the evening.

On social media platform X, many users described struggling to pay rent or make urgent transfers. Small businesses relying on these platforms for sales and shipping were hit hard, with some reporting missing transaction records.

PayPal acknowledged the issue as a "production environment problem" and said it was resolved by early afternoon, though full stabilization took until overnight. No clear cause was shared, but the incident underscores the risks of relying on digital payment systems and cashless systems when outages occur unexpectedly.
