PayPal has announced a significant enhancement to its offerings by enabling U.S. merchants to buy, hold, and sell cryptocurrency directly from their PayPal business accounts. This new feature, however, will not be available to businesses operating in New York State at the time of the launch.

The announcement marks a pivotal step in PayPal's ongoing efforts to increase the utility of cryptocurrencies, making these capabilities accessible to millions of merchants across the United States.

Jose Fernandez da Ponte, Senior Vice President of Blockchain, Cryptocurrency, and Digital Currencies at PayPal, expressed the company's commitment to understanding consumer needs, stating, "Since we launched the ability for PayPal and Venmo consumers to buy, sell, and hold cryptocurrency in their wallets, we have learned a lot about how they want to use their cryptocurrency."

He added, "Business owners have increasingly expressed a desire for the same cryptocurrency capabilities available to consumers. We're excited to meet that demand by delivering this new offering, empowering them to engage with digital currencies effortlessly."

In addition to these features, PayPal will also allow merchants to transfer cryptocurrency externally to third-party eligible wallets, providing further flexibility. Business account holders can now send and receive supported cryptocurrency tokens to and from external blockchain addresses.

This move follows a series of initiatives by PayPal to enhance cryptocurrency utilization, including the launch of PayPal USD (PYUSD), a U.S. dollar-denominated stablecoin, and its recent integration with the Solana blockchain. These efforts collectively underscore PayPal's strategy to provide comprehensive and accessible cryptocurrency solutions.
