Plaid Expands Layer Onboarding Tool with Autofill Feature

Fintech firm Plaid has announced an update to its Layer onboarding product, adding an autofill capability designed to reduce friction for U.S. consumers opening accounts or accessing financial services.
Layer, launched in 2024, has onboarded more than one million users and now covers over 40 million pre-verified customers with linked financial accounts. The new autofill feature extends access beyond Plaid's existing network by enabling companies to onboard both new and returning users with minimal manual data entry.
The system verifies returning customers through Plaid's infrastructure while authenticating new users with device-based checks and regulated identity sources. Risk safeguards include device ID verification, carrier authentication, and behavioral analysis using more than 150 data signals.
Plaid said the update is designed to align with recent U.S. regulatory guidance. In July, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation clarified that banks can use pre-filled identity data for compliance with Customer Identification Program requirements, as long as customers review and approve the information.
Analysts note that the move comes as regulators tighten oversight of digital identity processes. With U.S. institutions facing billions in losses from account-opening fraud each year, products like Layer could help reduce onboarding times from days to minutes while lowering customer abandonment rates.
