Plus500 Placed Its Sports Bet Just in Time as World Cup Shatters Prediction Market Records

02ee183ce8caa8b940e8ef2dbdb5b29.jpegWhen Plus500 added sports event contracts to its US platform earlier this year, the potential scale was speculative. The 2026 FIFA World Cup has now provided a concrete figure. Polymarket's flagship "World Cup Winner" market has attracted $4 billion in volume since July 2025, becoming the largest single market in the platform's history and surpassing its 2024 US presidential election contract.

Kalshi's equivalent market has surpassed $1 billion in volume. As the tournament entered the round of 16, France was priced at a 34% implied probability to win, with defending champions Argentina at 18%.

Prediction markets processed over $50 billion in June, a 75% increase from May, according to Artemis data. Kalshi accounted for approximately $33 billion, including $7.4 billion in World Cup trades, exceeding its entire March Madness volume. Polymarket's World Cup activity hit $6.6 billion in June, a stark contrast to $138,000 during the 2022 tournament. The Robinhood-backed venue Rothera added around $2 billion.

The World Cup acts as an exceptional catalyst, concentrating liquidity into a brief period. While the June figures represent an event-driven spike rather than a new baseline, such short-lived surges are integral to the business model for firms distributing these products.

Plus500 integrated Kalshi's CFTC-regulated sports contracts, covering major leagues like the NFL and NBA, onto its Plus500 Futures platform just before the World Cup began. The broker serves as a retail access layer, handling client onboarding and the trading interface while clearing trades through its Kalshi Klear membership. It also provides clearing services for FanDuel Prediction Markets.

This positioning exposes Plus500 to the largest liquidity event in prediction market history. Retail flow into Kalshi's football contracts is partly channeled through the infrastructure Plus500 established in February. The broker does not separately disclose prediction market revenue. Its US business generated approximately $35 million in quarterly revenue prior to the tournament, a 45% year-over-year increase driven by its non-OTC offerings including futures and event contracts.

The demand for Plus500's sports betting product has been validated on a scale exceeding most expectations from February. The final measure of financial impact, the payout from this activity, remains to be seen and will be revealed in the broker's next quarterly report.
