According to Boston Consulting Group’s (BCG) 23rd annual Global Payments Report, total global payments revenue, which reached $1.9 trillion in 2024, is projected to grow at a slower pace of 4% annually to reach $2.4 trillion by 2029.

BCG identifies five forces that are expected to redefine payments: the adoption of agentic AI in commerce, digital currencies including stablecoins, fintech innovation, real-time A2A systems, and ongoing cost transformation efforts. These developments present opportunities and challenges for banks, nonbanks, and institutional service providers aiming to optimize customer experience, operational efficiency, and risk management.

Agentic AI is poised to significantly influence e-commerce activity, with BCG research indicating that 81% of US consumers expect to leverage AI-powered tools in shopping, potentially shaping over half of online transactions. Stablecoins, while primarily concentrated in crypto trading, reached $26 trillion in volume, suggesting underexploited potential in real-world payment use cases.

Payments-focused fintechs continue to expand rapidly, generating $176 billion in 2024 revenue and growing at 23% annually. These firms account for nearly half of total fintech revenue, with top performers outpacing incumbents threefold. Meanwhile, real-time A2A payments are gaining traction globally, now representing roughly a quarter of digital retail transactions and surpassing 50% in markets such as India and Brazil. Middle East and Africa are poised for accelerated adoption, with projections exceeding 50% penetration by 2030.

For institutional stakeholders, these trends emphasize the need to integrate emerging technologies into both client offerings and operational infrastructures. Firms that combine AI-driven insights, digital currency capabilities, and real-time transaction execution into scalable, compliant frameworks are likely to secure competitive advantage in the coming decade.

BCG’s analysis underlines that growth in payments is increasingly tied to the ability to operationalize innovation. Financial institutions and service providers must consider both technological adoption and structural integration to maximize returns, manage risk, and address evolving customer expectations in a global, digital-first market.
