Registration Open for CMC Markets' Panel on March 31st

In March 2021, CMC Markets hosted a virtual panel as part of the company's celebration of International Women's Day. Lead by Camilla Boldracchi of the CMC Markets Connect team, the discussion and subsequent break-out workshops looked at the role the blockchain has the potential to play in the future of digital settlements. This is clearly a very broad topic and the conversation was only made possible thanks to the assistance of the knowledgeable panel, which included Alessandra Sollberger, Lavinia Osbourne and Christine Gschwend, along with critical support from out moderator, Katie Pilbeam.
Not only did the event provide a cornerstone to CMC Markets' promotion of women in the Fintech space, but it was also recognised as offering a valuable opportunity to look at what in 2021 was considered a key trending topic. Previous attempt to address the subject had all too often ended up straying into the domain of cryptocurrencies, but delegate feedback suggested that this panel was able to overcome these historical hurdles, even with the volatile price action which was being seen at the time by the likes of Bitcoin – arguably a theme that hasn't relented much over the last 12 months, either.
Key takeaways from the 2021 panel included:
"25 years ago, the internet was dominated by domain name speculation" offering optimism that the blockchain conversation won't always be dominated by the cryptocurrency debate.
"The blockchain can play a critical role in banking the unbanked" referencing the popularity of cryptocurrencies in developing countries where mobile phone penetration is prolific, yet many are unbanked.
"The blockchain is no longer powering a haven for money laundering" panellists noted that it is no longer the anonymous venue that many claimed, with reports that the vast majority of crypto wallets now have some kind of identifying data attached.
"The blockchain will be the future for money" mainstream companies are already accepting payment supported by the blockchain. In the year 2000, over 50% of all transactions in the UK were made with cash. By 2019 that figure had fallen to under 15% and it continues to decline.
Building on this momentum, CMC Markets announced that they will be hosting a second panel on March 31st, focusing on the subject of Cryptocurrencies: Can Digital Assets Ever Replace Gold As An Inflation Hedge? A timely topic, given inflation globally is bearing down on markets and in turn diminishing the wealth of many. This year's event will see an even bigger panel with more participants getting involved as thanks to the easing of COVID restrictions, CMC will be using a hybrid format with attendance either in person or via an interactive live stream.
