British fintech Revolut, has reported a substantial turnaround in its financial performance for 2023, swinging to a pretax profit of £438 million from a previous year's loss. The company's revenue nearly doubled, surpassing expectations to reach £1.8 billion, reinforcing its position as Europe's most valuable startup with a valuation exceeding $40 billion. Despite these achievements, Revolut continues its pursuit of a UK banking license, a process initiated in 2021, which remains pending regulatory approval.

CEO Nikolay Storonsky expressed confidence in Revolut's prospects for obtaining the banking license, citing ongoing constructive engagement with UK regulators. He acknowledged the challenges posed by the company's scale, which has contributed to extended regulatory review periods. Recent efforts to restructure share classes, aligning with regulatory requirements, represent significant steps toward fulfilling licensing conditions and expanding service offerings in the UK market. Revolut's evolution from an electronic money institution to a licensed bank could enable it to introduce lending products like credit cards, personal loans, and mortgages, enhancing its competitive edge and market penetration.
