Robinhood's OGC Nice Sponsorship Under French Regulatory Scrutiny

Robinhood sponsorship of OGC Nice football club under French regulatory scrutiny

French regulators are examining Robinhood's front-of-shirt sponsorship of OGC Nice, according to a report by L'Équipe. The review by the National Gambling Authority (ANJ) focuses on Robinhood's prediction-market business, which France treats as unauthorized gambling.

Under French law, advertising an unauthorized gambling site is a criminal offense. However, Robinhood's event contracts are limited to US residents, and the company's French website does not list prediction markets.

The inquiry follows a warning from nine European gambling regulators urging sports bodies to verify the legal status of prediction-market operators before signing commercial agreements. In February, the ANJ stated that prediction-market sites are not authorized in France and are treated as illegal gambling, citing addiction, integrity, and consumer-protection risks.

On July 16, the ANJ ordered French internet providers to block Polymarket, saying its homepage promoted an unauthorized gambling offer. Other European authorities have taken similar actions, such as the Dutch regulator ordering Polymarket to stop serving the Netherlands without a local gambling license.

Robinhood and OGC Nice announced a multi-year agreement on July 1, 2025, making Robinhood the principal partner of the club's men's and women's first teams from the 2025/26 season. The deal covers match shirts, training kits, stadium signage, and digital channels. The announcement did not mention prediction markets, but Robinhood said the agreement would introduce new audiences to its financial products as it expanded in the European Union.

L'Équipe did not specify whether the ANJ views the corporate logo as promotion of prediction markets, and no formal action has been identified. The ANJ had not published an enforcement notice naming Robinhood or OGC Nice by Wednesday.

Robinhood launched its Prediction Markets Hub in March 2025, initially relying on Kalshi, a US exchange regulated by the CFTC. It later added Rothera, a designated contract market. The company reported $156 million in event-contract revenue for Q2 2026, more than equities or cryptocurrencies, with customers trading 13.6 billion contracts.
