Russian Lawmakers Approve Cryptocurrency Use for International Payments Amid Sanctions Pressure

Russian lawmakers have passed a new law on Tuesday enabling the use of cryptocurrencies for international transactions, a move seen as a response to ongoing economic sanctions from Western nations. The State Duma, Russia's lower house of Parliament, granted preliminary approval to the legislation on Tuesday, allowing businesses to utilize digital currencies for cross-border trade, according to local media reports.
Anatoly Aksakov, head of the Duma, pointed out the significance of the decision in the financial realm during Tuesday's session. "We are taking a historic decision in the financial sphere," he stated, as reported by Reuters.
Commenting on Russia's shift towards cryptocurrency, Mati Greenspan, CEO of Quantum Economics, highlighted the practical advantages of digital assets like Bitcoin in circumventing government or banking restrictions. "Bitcoin transactions cannot be censored or blocked by any government or bank," Greenspan noted. He explained that Russia's adoption of crypto reflects a recognition of its widespread use in everyday commerce and the economic drawbacks of not permitting such transactions.
