The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has charged five entities and three individuals in relation to two separate investment scams involving fraudulent cryptocurrency trading platforms, NanoBit and CoinW6. These complaints mark the SEC's first enforcement actions addressing this type of fraud.

According to Gurbir S. Grewal, Director of the SEC's Division of Enforcement, "Relationship investment scams, including those involving crypto asset investments, pose a risk of catastrophic harm to retail investors, and the threat is increasing rapidly." The SEC's allegations assert that the defendants created fake crypto environments, deceiving investors through social media interactions.

In the case against NanoBit, the SEC claims that participants impersonated financial professionals in WhatsApp groups to solicit investments, falsely portraying the platform as safe and SEC-registered. Allegations indicate that investors were misled into believing they could achieve significant returns, while in reality, over $2 million in funds were misappropriated.

Separately, the SEC's complaint against CoinW6 involves participants who pretended to be affluent young professionals to cultivate relationships with investors, leading them to believe they could earn substantial returns on investments in crypto asset staking and mining. The investigation revealed that funds were misappropriated, and investors faced additional demands for payments when attempting to withdraw supposed profits.
