On July 29, Gurbir S. Grewal, the Director of the Division of Enforcement of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) gave a statement in honor of the National Whistleblower Day, an annual recognition of whistleblowers whose actions have protected the American people from fraud or malfeasance.

"We applaud the courage of whistleblowers who step forward and report unlawful conduct. Whistleblower protections are a cornerstone of the SEC's whistleblower program and we are committed to enforcing these protections to stop efforts to impede individuals from coming forward with information," said Grewal in the statement.

The SEC has given out more than $1.3 billion to 278 people since it made its first award in 2012. These informants assisted the SEC in bringing enforcement actions that resulted in $5 billion in fines being imposed. Particularly in fiscal year 2021, the SEC awarded 108 whistleblowers a total of $564 million, setting a new record.
