This new unit will replace the former Crypto Assets and Cyber Unit and will be led by Laura D’Allaird, a seasoned professional in the field. The CETU consists of a team of approximately 30 fraud specialists and attorneys from various SEC offices, specifically trained to tackle the growing concerns in fintech and cybersecurity.

Acting SEC Chairman Mark T. Uyeda highlighted the importance of this new initiative, explaining that under Laura D’Allaird’s leadership, the CETU will support the ongoing efforts of the Crypto Task Force led by Commissioner Hester Peirce. The creation of the CETU will allow the SEC to effectively allocate enforcement resources, ensuring a more targeted approach toward safeguarding investors. The SEC believes that, by ensuring the integrity of emerging technologies, the CETU will promote innovation and maintain confidence in new technologies while rooting out bad actors looking to exploit these advancements for fraudulent purposes.

The primary focus of the new unit will be combating misconduct related to securities transactions in key areas. This includes fraud facilitated by artificial intelligence and machine learning, as well as the use of social media, the dark web, and fake websites to carry out deceptive practices. The unit will also address issues surrounding hacking to obtain nonpublic information, the unlawful takeover of retail brokerage accounts, fraud in blockchain and cryptocurrency assets, and the compliance of regulated entities with cybersecurity rules.

Additionally, the CETU will focus on the public issuer’s responsibility to provide accurate and transparent cybersecurity disclosures, a vital area in protecting investors and maintaining trust in the financial markets. The creation of the unit marks a significant step forward in the SEC’s efforts to adapt to the growing influence of technology on financial markets and ensure that retail investors are shielded from cyber threats and fraud in the ever-changing landscape of emerging technologies.
