SEC Launches AI Task Force, Appoints Valerie Szczepanik as Chief AI Officer

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has unveiled a new agencywide task force focused on artificial intelligence (AI), marking a strategic push to embed AI technologies across its operations. Veteran regulator Valerie Szczepanik has been named the Commission's first Chief AI Officer and will lead the initiative.
The newly formed AI Task Force is intended to align AI efforts across the SEC's divisions and offices, with a focus on boosting efficiency, accuracy, and oversight capacity. According to the SEC, the task force will prioritize applications that yield measurable benefits, help break down operational barriers, and promote interdepartmental collaboration.
Chairman Paul S. Atkins emphasized the broader vision behind the move, stating, "The AI Task Force will empower staff across the SEC with AI-enabled tools and systems to responsibly augment the staff's capacity, accelerate innovation, and enhance efficiency and accuracy."
Szczepanik, who has held senior roles in financial technology and enforcement, said the task force would aim to centralize the Commission's efforts. "I look forward to accelerating work already underway... to implement AI solutions that are trustworthy, effective, and mission enhancing," she remarked.
While the SEC did not provide specific timelines or early use cases, officials noted that exploratory AI projects are ongoing. The agency's announcement reflects a broader trend across federal regulators, including the Federal Reserve and CFTC, who are also ramping up internal AI initiatives. The SEC views this effort as foundational to modernizing its own regulatory tools in response to increasing technological sophistication in financial markets.
